Ticks are considered arachnids and there are about 200 species of ticks in the US. There are two main types of ticks: hard and soft ticks. Hard ticks are typically found in wooded areas and feed on humans, pets and nuisance wildlife, and soft ticks are generally found in cabins and caves where they feed on birds and bats. Unlike fleas that jump, ticks fall or climb onto hosts. However, these pests can live up to 200 days without food or water.
